Wild Women: A look at outdoor literature and the women who write about the wilderness (Presentation, January 2019)

From hiking the Pacific Crest Trail to attempting Mt. Everest to scouting for elephants in Kenya, women have repeatedly claimed a place in the outdoors and shared about those experiences in their writing. But each and every claim came at a price.

In this seminar, we will be taking a look at outdoor literature written by women and the questions, criticism, or stereotypes they’ve faced in telling their story. We will discuss the boundaries that are still being broken as more and more women claim their right to exist in the outdoors, and the lengths they’ve gone to in their fight for equality. This seminar will explore how outdoor literature written by women addresses the greater complications of gender relations in our modern culture.

Stonecoast MFA graduating thesis (Published January 2019)

Hunt Trail: A Novel is a hiking suspense novel about Bailey, a rough-around-the-edges girl from northern Maine who hikes the 100-Mile-Wilderness to follow her long-time family friend, Jay, who Bailey fears to be a murderer. Each chapter follows Bailey as she walks deeper into the woods, experiencing life on the trail while clouded by her search for Jay and the potential danger that awaits his next victim.

Bailey begins to wonder if she is hiking for the first time since her father passed away to follow Jay, or if there’s something more. As she walks deeper into the woods, Bailey finds that the trail leads her further toward everything she’s been avoiding since her father’s death – addiction, denial, and the truth behind her relationship with Jay.
